Two things usually do not happen in the universe, one being a main boing card on a Thursday night or boxing in the city of Miami. What we got fight fans was a taste of both. It was a loaded card with eleven total fights, 3 of those being title fights, and also another Youtube fight (take that however you want it), but with that being said we are going to review four of the biggest fights on the card that occurred in Miami.
First up is Daniel Roman (27-2-1) of Los Angeles defending his WBA and IBF bantamweight belts against challenger Murodjon Akhmadeliev (7-0) of Uzbekistan. Looking at the records of both, one would think that Akhmadeliev was overmatched in this one, but on the contrary, Akhmadeliev was a decorated amateur and medal winning olympian looking to dethrone the champ. It was a back and forth battle from start to finish, with both boxers unloading multiple power shots, it looked as though someone would end up with a knockout, but this wasn’t the case, and both boxers made it to the final round of a grueling matchup. When the judges cards were read it was Akmadeliev who was the new champion in a well deserved split decision victory.
For our next event we had IBF super featherweight champion Tevin Farmer (30-4-1) out of Philadelphia defending his belt again contender Joseph “JoJo” Diaz out of South El Monte, CA. This one had some spice to it, as the buildup to this fight had plenty of drama and trash talk. Farmer who had not lost a fight since 2012, was looking to make his fifth defense of the belt. Diaz, whose only loss was to WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr., was fair game from the start of the bell and took it to Farmer early and often. A bad cut opened over Diaz’s eye early in the fight, but he was still able to control the fight at will and despite some questionable judge scorecards, dominated the usually slick Farmer to come out the newest champion on what seemed like a night of upsets.
Now I hate to even call this a boxing match but by legality it is. American youtube star Jake Paul was fighting AnEsonGib (another youtube star) in what was a one sided clown fight to speak ever so lightly. Paul dominated from the onset and the overmatched Gib looked completely out of his element, after one round the fight was stopped due to three knockdowns and Paul’s hand was raised in victory.
Ok back to some real actual boxing, but in so many ways not. The main event was WBO Middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (28-0) of Rhode Island, U.S., defending his belt against major underdog Luke Keeler (17-2-1) of Ireland. It was a one sided fight from the start as Andrade dropped Keeler with the second punch of the fight. Andrade would drop Keeler again early on, and it looked as though at any moment the fight would be stopped. The overmatched Keeler showed alot of heart by taking plenty of punishment, but by round nine the referee had seen enough and put an end to the fight. Andrade will now look to take a major jump in competition for his next fight in the division with much bigger names on the horizon.
Well that wraps up a rather strange night of fighting in Miami. We saw YouTubers fight, two champions dethroned and a one sided main event, I guess that’s just the beauty of boxing.
