SimBoxx Talks To Tom Farrell

Saturday November 23rd, Liverpool, the date & location for Callum Smith’s home coming bout, after travelling to Saudi Arabia to claim the WBA Super Middleweight with a destructive 7th KO of George Groves, ‘Mundo’ would travel to New York as chief support to the huge Anthony Joshua v Andy Ruiz clash, to defend the title against Hassan N’Dam, due maybe to the seismic upset in the afore mentioned main event the fact Smith obliterated N’Dam inside 3 rounds is often overlooked by many, but not in Liverpool, Smith is a hero to his fellow Scousers & it promises to be a helluva night.

On the undercard this weekend we have an intriguing bout between Birkenhead native Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd (16-5-1) & Liverpudlian Tom Farrell (17-2) in some of what of a must not lose bout, as both boxers seek to reposition themselves on the domestic scene.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to Tom Farrell ahead of the fight..

SB: Hi Tom, thanks for speaking to SimBoxx, you’ve got a big fight coming up against ‘Masher’ Dodd on the undercard of Callum Smith vs John Ryder for the super middleweight world title, can I get your thoughts on your fight?

TF: Yeah I can’t wait it’s going to be a great night and it’s a good fight to get me back in the mix.

SB: What’s you thoughts on Dodd as an opponent & also the fact this fight is somewhat a local derby?

TF: He’s a top lad we go way back knowing each other from the amateur days, not a bad word to say about him. We get on dead well, this is just business, in a local derby, in what should be a great fight.

SB: It certainly should be a great fight, how’s your training camp been in the build up to this bout? Is there aspects of your game you’re working on in particular?

TF: I’ve had a good camp, going into this one, off the back of another fight early October I feel fit & strong. Hard part of camps almost done now, it’s time to taper off soon and focus on the job, Ive focused on doing what I do well.

SB: Good to hear Tom, can you take us through the thought process behind having this fight hot on the heels of your most recent bout (points win v Palacios, Oct 5th)?

TF: Yeah mate it was essential I had that fight as I hadn’t boxed for 6 months, so wanted to get some ring rust off.

SB: Understable Tom, so obviously you’ve fought for titles in your career before, most recently the Commonwealth title, how important for you is it to get back in to title contention?

TF: Yes mate, it’s vital to get my career back on track. Get myself in some bigger fights.

SB: Looking at the super lightweight division, a stacked weight class both domestically & on a world level, there’s plenty of big names & big fights available if you can get the win against Masher & move on…

TF: Yes of course mate, never look past anyone I’ve got to do a job against Masher to open doors for a shot at the British title or other domestic honours.

SB: Is the MTK Golden Contract tournament something that’s of the interest to you? Especially with the Super Lightweight version up coming

TF: Yes it looks a great concept with some quality fighters involved and obviously some lucrative fight purses. I’m on my own path at the minute though and looking to win this fight & look at getting a title shot.

SB: Fair play Tom, can I get your thoughts on the main event on Nov 23rd, Calum Smith defending his world super middleweight title against John Ryder..

TF: Think it’s a great fight, John Ryder is in a good run of form and can make it a competitive fight but Callum will take some beating, he’s shown he is a bit special & I can only see him winning.

SB: Brilliant Tom, thanks for your time, is there anything you’d like to add to finish?

TF: Just a thanks to everyone whose coming to support it’s going to be a busy night. I’ve got a great set of friends family and loyal supporters. Also a thanks to my sponsors, Paul @ProbeCSS, Tony Exel Drylining Mark & Jane @wirralcryo, Joel @TheMacroChef, David Intelligent Scaffolding, Dave @53liverpool all look after me.
