Recently I had the pleasure of talking to current British Featherweight Champion Ryan Walsh to discuss his upcoming title defence and his world title aspirations.
SB: Hi Ryan, you have your another defence of your British Featherweight Title (this will be Walsh’s sixth defence) coming up against the unbeaten Lewis Paulin (12-0), it must be something your really proud of to have such success with the prestigious Lonsdale belt?
RW: Definitely, I’m a very old school type of fighter & that belt has history. It’s also a added bonus that I think it’s by far the prettiest, genuinely the best looking belt!
SB: Looking ahead at your opponent, as previously mentioned Paulin is undefeated but he’s certainly stepping up in class considerably fighting someone with your experience, what do you expect to encounter from him come fight night?
RW: I’m expecting him to rise to the occasion & be better than he’s ever been. Fighting for the British title can certainly have that effect.
SB: A quick look at some of you CV shows you’ve been in with and beaten some top quality fighters, James Tennyson for example, who’ve went on to challenge for world honours, do you still hold aspirations to reach that level yourself?
RW: Yes 100% and so long as I keep winning I’m very confident MTK can put me in a position to reach those aspirations.
SB: As a proud boxing family, how much would it mean to the Walsh’s to get another crack at world title after your brother Liam’s IBF world title fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis?
RW:A world title shot is the culmination of a life time of hard work so I think it’s hard to put into words. I can imagine it’s very exciting. I was so happy when Liam earned his shot.
SB: Certainly is Ryan, to finish can I push you on a prediction for the Paulin fight?
RW: Haha never predicted a knockout victory in my life, all I will say is I win, how is the exciting bit which makes boxing worth watching!!
