Preview: Davis vs Santa Cruz

Fight week is upon us, for what some have labelled the most stacked fight card since the pandemic struck the boxing world down.

Headlining the card will be three-time world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs four-division champion Leo Santa Cruz.

The halloween thriller is sure to have fireworks with two belts on the line in the WBA Super Featherweight and the WBA lightweight championships, a rare occurrence in boxing.

The fight marks the second appearance of both fighters within the lightweight division. Davies scored a 12th round stoppage victory over Yuriorkis Gamboa last December and Santa Cruz won a wide points decision against Miguel Flores a month prior.

Despite his youth Davis (23-0 22 KO’s) is seen as the favorite as he takes on the more fat experienced Santa Cruz (37-1-1 19 KO’s).

Two things will be key to watch here. Will Tank be the first fighter to stop Santa Cruz? Or can the high boxing IQ of Santa Cruz stop Davis?

Santa Cruz is known to mix it up in the pocket but with a heavy puncher and possibly heavier man in Davis, it may seem likely Santa Cruz takes on a more orthodox approach, as we saw him do in his rematch with Carl Frampton.

Davies on the other hand will look to implement his patented seek and destroy approach, walking Santa Cruz down and imposing his fearsome power.

Only time will tell as we are delivered a halloween treat this weekend.

The co-main event will also feature WBA Regular Super Lightweight Champion Mario “El Azteca”Barrios defending his title against slugger Ryan “Cowboy” Karl. The popular 25-0 Barrios has got it all to play for in a division quickly becoming known for its all action fights.

We will also be treated to the return of former champion Regis Prograis.

After negotiations fell through earlier this year to fight another former champion in Maurice Hooker, Prograis is making his first return to the ring since he lost his WBA belt to Josh Taylor almost exactly a year to the day. He will be taking on undefeated but unheralded Juan Heraldez.
