Fight week is now officially upon us. After a somewhat bizarre past weekend of boxing action, we are now treated to a AAA fight between welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. and former champion Danny Garcia.
This fight as well has some bizarreness to it, considering the champion Spence (26-0 21 KO’s) has not fought in more than a year after a serious car crash left him in the intensive care unit. Despite apparently no broken bones from the injury, it seems as though the champ has fully recovered from the wreck.
Hopefully the recovery is 100%, especially considering Spence is taking on more than a formidable opponent in the power puncher Garcia (36-2 21 KO’s). Garcia, a native of Philadelphia has seen more than his fair share of glorious moments, and is determined to not only show he still has more than enough left in the tank, but that he can be the first to finally dethrone the undefeated champion.
It’s a night that is sure to be full of fireworks. With Spence being the more skilled and slick boxer, and Garcia more of a traditional brawler, this should be a fight that could either go the distance or end quickly.
With Spence still being the odds on favorite (and rightfully so), this is an interesting bout to view. With the recovery of Spence still up for speculation, it should be interesting to see just how well the champ has recovered from his injuries, and he better hope so as well, with Garcia being a very tough task to take on, especially considering the ring rust from Spence.
With the WBC and IBF titles on the line this fight is important for not just the return of Spence or the possible comeback of Danny Garcia, but with two major titles on the line this dictates the scope of the welteweight division. With a win, will Spence be looking on to bigger and more lucrative challenges, such as Terence Crawford? Or possibly older but still formidable champion Manny Pacquaio? Only time will tell, but make sure to tune in Saturday for a big drama show.
