Saturday, May 4th, T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas we will determine who is the premiere middleweight on the planet, the very best at 160lbs as Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez clashes with Daniel ‘ Miracle Man’ Jacobs is a mouth watering fight that will etch it’s very own place in boxing folklore.
In Canelo, a 3 weight world champion, we have a boxer who is arguably the biggest name in the sport of boxing, albeit a certain Anthony Joshua may testify that statement, the Mexican has built a record of 51-1-2 (35 KOs) by the age of just 28, a phenomenal record stacked with a who’s who of current and former world champions, a sole defeat coming to the legendary Floyd Mayweather when Canelo was a green 23 year old, no longer, since that setback Canelo has rattled off some very impressive wins notably against Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and, of course, Gennady Golovkin having also drawn with the Kazakh monster in their first bout.
Across the ring stands New Yorker Daniel Jacobs, who holds the IBF middleweight strap, won via a split decision victory over the previously unbeaten Ukrainian, Sergiy Derevyanchenko but ‘The Miracle Man’ achieved his greatest triumph outside of the ring when he battled and ultimately defeated a life threatening bone cancer that left him unable to walk for a period of time and a return to the ring was nothing more than an near impossible dream but ‘impossible’ is clearly a word that doesn’t exist in any dictionary owned by Jacobs, he made an astonishing full recovery that enabled him to resume his in-ring boxing career, a brutal 5th stoppage defeat to the feared Dmitry Pirog and a highly, some may say controversial, points loss to Gennady Golovkin the only setbacks on his CV, currently his record reads 35-2 (29KOs).
Here at SimBoxx we asked some of Boxing followers for their expert views and opinions on the big fight;
Billy Nelson, renowned boxing trainer–
”I believe Canelo will win this fight on points, I believe his volume of punches and speed of punch will be the telling factor. Also he has great defence”
Jimmy Kelly, professional boxer & former World Title challenger-
”I’m going for a Canelo stoppage. Think he will get his feet right on top of DJ and not allow him space like GGG did and slowly break him with those combos”
Lee Carter, former professional boxer–
”I think canelo points but with controversy’
Vinny Paz, retired, former World Champion boxer-
”To be honest not sure. Unless Jacobs can put the heat on hard make him work. It will be CANELO hopefully not but prob by decision”
Ryan Walsh, current British Featherweight Champion-
”I’m going Canelo points, I think Jacobs size and style will cause some problems for which Canelo will ultimately overcome”
Ryan Doyle, former Commonwealth Featherweight Champion–
”I genuinely think it’s a 50-50 fight they are both tremendous boxes and great inside fighters both explosive so I’m sat on the fence if I am honest my head is saying Canelo but I would love Jacobs to pull it off”
Curtis Gargano, former professional boxer and current boxing trainer-
”I think it will be close but if Jacobs turns up like he did against GGG then Canelo is in for a fight but if it goes to points I’m saying Canelo. This is going to be a fight and half, Jacobs has more than a chance of winning this one”
Michael Watson MBE, retired, former Commonwealth Middleweight Champion and World Title Challenger-
”I think it’s a close fight, with Jacobs starting well but Canelo warming into it and winning with great counter punching”
Joe Hughes, former EBU Light Welterweight Champion-
‘‘My prediction would be Canelo closely on points, I think there will be periods where Jacobs outboxes him at range but Canelo ends up landing the cleaner more visible shots and will edge the rounds because of that”
John Murray, former British and European champion and World Title challenger-
”Canelo to win via points decision. I expect Jacobs to be tough and I think he’ll go the distance. I think he might cause problems for canelo in the middle rounds but I expect him to work him out and win points 115/112”
