This weekend marks the return of former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz (33-2 22 KO’s). The former WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champion will be returning to action for the first time since a lopsided loss to Anthony Joshua in 2019.
The opponent for Ruiz will be fellow Mexican-American, Chris Arreola (38-6 33KO’s). The veteran Arreola has also not fought since 2019 - a decision loss to then undefeated Polish boxer Adam Kownacki. Arreola is well past his prime at the age of 40, but looks to garner a puncher's chance vs the much younger and dangerous Ruiz.
Ruiz became a media darling in 2019, when he upset the undefeated and heavily favored Brit Anthony Joshua to become the first heavyweight champion of Mexican descent. After six months of being champion, his reign as champion was cut short as Joshua regained his titles in an unanimous decision over the out of shape Ruiz in December of that year.
Andy Ruiz went back to the “drawing board” so to speak and got rid of his longtime trainer, replacing him with world renowned trainer Eddie Reynoso, who is known for his work with multiple division champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. With a new trainer in tow and a significant difference in weight and work regimen, it seems Ruiz is ready for war on Saturday - especially considering he is now down to a reported 255 LBS, down nearly 30 LBS from his previous weight in the Joshua fight.
This fight looks to be a “war” in terms of styles as Ruiz and Arreola both provide one punch knockout power. Expect a fight full of fire works as the two clash this weekend.
