COVID-19 has destroyed everything within its path, this includes our world of boxing. 2020 was looking to be quite an eventful boxing season. With fights being postponed to later dates or altogether cancelled, let’s take a look at some of the best fights that we anticipated this year.
Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez 3:
This fight was not officially signed, but had been agreed upon by both camps. Despite this, it is a highly anticipated fight. Sure Canelo was likely to face Billy Joe Saunders first, as well as GGG scheduled to face an even lesser opponent in Kamil Szeremeta, but let’s be honest, the trilogy fight is what everyone was waiting for. With two action packed fights scored by a draw and a disputed decision victory for Canelo, everyone in boxing was ready for a trilogy fight. One we hope we get to see sooner rather than later, especially considering GGG just turned 38.
Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder 3:
Another trilogy fight here, and an entertaining one at that. These heavyweights have duked it out twice, with a controversial draw the first go-round and an absolute domination by Fury in the second fight. With Fury being the heavy betting favorite this time, the fight if it happens will be pushed back to the end of the year. Also despite Fury being the heavy favorite, Wilder has some of the best power in the heavyweight division. No matter the results of the last fight, the trilogy fight has many still excited, Hopefully this one gets done sooner rather than later as fans would love to see a third bout.
Vasyl Lomachenko vs Teofimo Lopez:
This fight is one that has been a classic storyline for ages, the accomplished superstar veteran vs the up and coming new generation superstar. Lomachenko at 32-years-old is nearly a full decade older than Lopez (who will turn 23 in July), and despite the age difference has only fought 15 times, the same amount as Lopez. Although Lomachenko did not make his professional debut until he was nearly 26, his amateur record speaks for itself. He has dominated accomplished boxers such as Gary Russell Jr. and Guillermo Rigondeaux in his path and is a constant figure in the p4p rankings. Lopez, an exciting power puncher, thinks he has the goods to be the first to knock out the Ukranian star, the only issue is, when will he get his chance?
Manny Pacquaio vs (Insert Name):
It really doesn’t matter who Manny Pacquaio will fight in 2020, either way it will be a major fight. One of the most polarizing figures in the history of the sport, returned in 2019 with a vengeance. Handing welterweight titlist Keith Thurman his first defeat all while looking much younger than his birth certificate age of 40. The fight showed Pacquaio still has much left in the tank, and rather he gets a fight with Errol Spence Jr. or Terence Crawford or even Mikey Garcia, any fight the Pacman gets will be a major spectacle in boxing.
